Jeep Model Line-Up Crash Test Ratings

February 9th, 2023 by

Picking a vehicle based on its safety can help you and your passengers stay safe while on the road. There are several institutions that measure the safety of vehicles, but crash safety can help you decide what’s best for you. Keep reading to learn more about the Jeep model lineup and their respective crash test ratings.

What Are Crash Test Ratings?

Crash test ratings are a system developed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) to gauge two areas of vehicle crashes: crashworthiness and crash avoidance or mitigation. Crashworthiness is how well a vehicle protects its passengers during a crash. Crash avoidance or mitigation is what technology a vehicle has to avoid or minimize the damage from a crash. The primary scale for the IIHS is as follows:

  • G: Good. This is the highest rating a vehicle can receive in a category and means that a component or aspect of the vehicle excels at its job.
  • A: Acceptable. This is the second-highest rating and means the component or aspect of the vehicle performs its job well.
  • M: Marginal. This is the second-lowest rating and means the component or aspect of the vehicle might perform its job or could fail during a crash.
  • P: Poor. This is the lowest rating a component can receive in a category and means that it likely doesn’t perform its function well.

The IIHS also uses a secondary scale, which goes from basic to superior. Basic means the system performs at the lowest acceptable level for standards in the United States. Advanced means the system does well at performing its function, sometimes having extra features to increase its function. Superior means that the system or component excels at its role within the vehicle, often easily exceeding standards in the U.S. The IIHS applies these ratings to several crash test categories of every vehicle, which are:

  • Small overlap front driver side: A type of crash test in which a small section of the front driver’s side of the vehicle impacts a crash test simulant.
  • Small overlap front passenger side: A type of crash test in which a small section of the front passenger side of the vehicle impacts a crash test simulant.
  • Moderate overlap front: A type of crash test in which a moderate amount of the front of the vehicle impacts a crash test simulant.
  • Side: A type of crash test in which a crash test simulant with SUV-type qualities impacts the side of the vehicle.
  • Roof: A type of test where the IIHS applies pressure to the top of the vehicle to learn about the strength of the roof.
  • Head restraints and seats: A series of tests to determine if the head restraints and seats are tall and large enough to protect a variety of people.
  • Headlights: The IIHS measures the brightness of the headlights at various angles, including straight on, to determine how well they illuminate critical areas for drivers.
  • Front crash prevention – vehicle-to-vehicle: Tests to see how well a vehicle prevents crashes with vehicles in front of it with its automatic systems.
  • Front crash prevention – vehicle-to-pedestrian (day): Tests to see how well a vehicle prevents collisions with pedestrians in well-lit daytime conditions.
  • Front crash prevention – vehicle-to-pedestrian (night): Tests to see how well a vehicle prevents collisions with pedestrians in dark conditions.
  • Seat belt reminders: An examination of the seat belt reminder systems in the vehicle, such as lights, sounds, and other features to ensure drivers and passengers buckle their seat belts.
  • LATCH ease of use: A series of tests showing how easily a person can attach and detach a child safety seat to the LATCH system in a vehicle.

2022 Jeep Renegade

The Jeep Renegade excels in several categories of ratings. Its best systems are the front side overlap on the driver’s side, the roof strength, and the head restraints and seats. This model also comes with an optional vehicle-to-vehicle front collision prevention system, which receives a superior rating from the IIHS. The worst ratings for this vehicle are for the moderate overlap front and the headlights of the vehicle, where it received poor ratings based on trim level variations.

2022 Jeep Cherokee

The 2022 Jeep Cherokee received excellent marks in almost every category, scoring a good rating across each for keeping drivers and passengers safe. The only categories the Cherokee didn’t excel in were its headlights, which received Acceptable and Marginal safety ratings based on the trim levels of the vehicle.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The Jeep Grand Cherokee couldn’t quite compete with the Cherokee model but still excelled in several categories. Good ratings include the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints and seats. It also scored a Superior rating for its vehicle-to-vehicle front collision prevention system. Where the vehicle didn’t excel were the headlights, which got an Adequate and Poor rating based on different trim levels, small overlap on the passenger side where it received a Poor rating, small overlap on the driver’s side where it got a Marginal rating, and LATCH ease of use where it received a Marginal rating.

2022 Jeep Patriot

The Jeep Patriot received good ratings in most crashworthiness categories. These include the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, head restraints, and seats. It received Poor ratings for the small overlap driver’s side and for its headlights.

2022 Jeep Wrangler 4xe

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler received decent ratings for most categories, with only one poor rating for headlights on certain trim levels. It also received Good ratings on LATCH ease of use, head restraints and seats, roof strength, side, and moderate overlap front tests. Every other test received a marginal rating, except the front collision prevention system, which has a Superior rating.
